Web Accessibility

At Physio123 our goal is to create websites that can be used by anyone. All our designs adhere to accessibility standards as it helps make your site easier to use and it also ensures that those with disabilities can access it.

The Importance of Web Accessibility

Just as you want to ensure that those with physical disabilities can access your practice, you need to make sure that they can also access your website. With the Internet, you'd be surprised at just how many color blind, partially sighted and even blind people can surf – and by making your site accessible, you can target a demographic that perhaps no one else does.

Essentially, a 'web disability' is anything that makes using a computer difficult. These could be anything from the visual impairments mentioned above to more complex cases such as sufferers of a stroke, amputees and also those with learning disabilities.

Likewise as many people get older, they find the Internet harder to use and disregard it as a tool for the younger generation. Your website doesn't need to be like that, and if it's not you can show all your patients and potential clients that you really do care about ensuring everyone has an equal experience.

Why we design accessible websites?

You may think that an accessible website is something that's only going to cost more money. With Physio123 we take accessibility standards into account from an early design stage and we build sites using a process that ensures they're easy to use by just about anyone. Other reasons we build accessible websites are:
  • More and more governments are requiring healthcare and government related sites to be accessible
  • Designed correctly from the ground up, an accessible website isn't more expensive
  • You can attract more customers with an accessible website
  • An accessible website is easier to use for everyone
  • It shows you believe in equality and accessibility for all
  • Google loves accessible websites
Looking at legislation in Canada, things are only getting tougher with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms working to ensure that no website discriminates against a person with disabilities, creating an accessible website is one of the best ways in ensuring that you remain within the law.

Why Google is disabled

Google is perhaps an example of a 'blind' Internet user. People with visual impairments often use technology such as a screen reader that lets them browse the web which translates text and ONLY text into sound. If you have pictures, flash, or even some audio clips in your site, the screen reader will not be able to convey that to the blind person, nor will Google be able to notice.

As a result, ensuring that your site uses accessible standards ensures that Google can see everything. While it's still possible to use flash and images in your site, it's also important to use 'workarounds' such as alt tags and the likes. At Physio123 we automatically build your site with these improvements so that at the end of the day you have an accessible website that's highly professional.
